Using Behavior Modification Program to Reduce Stereotyped Behavior of Students with Autism

Abstract

This study study was aimed to study stereotyped behaviors of students with autism (Aged 9-15 yrs.) in a special education school using behavior modification program through physical activities.

The samplewas 3 students with autism, who exhibited stereotyped behaviors, in the second grade of Lopburi Panyanukul School in the second semester in 2552 academic year, selected by purposive sampling. The instruments of this study was behavior modification program through physical activities that consisted of 1) the stereotyped behavioral analysis, 2) the lesson plan of the behavior modification program through physical activities, and 3) the behavior observation sheet.

The Single Subject A-B-A-B Design was used in the study. In the baseline phase (A1): the data were gathered for 1 week without any intervention. In the intervention phase (B1): the behavior modification program through physical activities was introduced to 3 students with autism. The data were collected for 2 weeks. In the second baseline phase (A2): the data were then gathered again for 1 week without any intervention. In the intervention phase (B2): the behavior modification program through physical activities was reintroduced to those students and the data were collected for 2 weeks.

After using the behavior modification program through physical activities, the stereotyped behaviors of all three students were lower than those before using the program. The stereotyped behaviors of the first student with autism decreased from the baseline 45.70 %. The stereotyped behaviors of the second student with autism decreased from the baseline 51.98 %. The stereotyped behaviors of the third student with autism decreased from the baseline 50.70%
